12th JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience

For 12 days Durban will play host to a dazzling 12th edition of the international contemporary dance festival, JOMBA! One of four annual festivals hosted by the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Centre for Creative Arts, the JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience has become synonymous with cutting-edge dance theatre, and with principle funding from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund capacitating the festival, this bumper event contains a programme of broad scope and appeal.

On the international front, JOMBA! 2010 presents dance works from the Netherlands, Switzerland and Reunion Island, alongside wonderful offerings from both Durban and nationally-based dance companies.

Special guests include Johannesburg 's inimitable Moving Into Dance Mophatong who will grace JOMBA! with Sylvia Glasser's award winning “Threads”. This work has been created in collaboration with poet Lebo Mashile and is a rare chance for Durban to witness this poet extraordinaire in action with one of South Africa 's premier contemporary dance companies in a momentous fusion of dance and spoken word.

Also from Gauteng is choreographer Sello Peso whose Ntsoana Contemporary Dance Theatre Company is known for its conceptually challenging engagement with political and social issues. For JOMBA! he will be performing his recently created “Lime Light on Rites”. This site specific dance work, performed in an outside environment of the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre, explores the media exploitation of people's emotions around funeral policies. Peso comments: “Death is big business in this country and there is great social pressure to have big funerals. This pressure is compounded through the advertising strategies that play on the poor and the weak, exploiting their grief”. Peso will also be offering a master choreographic workshop during JOMBA! to all young artists/choreographers interested in creating site-specific theatre work.

Supporting local dance is one of JOMBA!'s key missions and this year commissions to create new work have been awarded to three of Durban 's top dance makers - Desiré Davids, Vusi Makhanya and Sifiso Majola. All three have a strong dance history behind them and step onto the ‘JOMBA! New Works' platform as seasoned and creative choreographers. The exciting New Works programme featuring these commissioned works will open the 12th edition of JOMBA! on 1st September.

The 2010 festival also has a strong focus on international collaborations that highlight the great Hip-Hop and Breakdance legacies of Durban. In a city-to- city exchange between the harbour cities of Durban and le Port on Reunion Island, the internationally acclaimed BBoy Kenji presents the African premiere of “A Contre Sud”, a collaborative work with three dancers from Durban and one from Cape Town. Kenji also showcases his Reunionaisse Soul City crew in the red-hot piece “Haine Terre Rieur”. Over and above this, Durban 's incomparable Flatfoot Dance Company will be collaborating with Dutch choreographer Daniel Renner and Dutch BBoy Rodney Kasandikromo, whose unique fusion of Breakdance, Hip-Hop and classical training is sure to impress and inspire local audiences and budding bboyz. Joining Flatfoot Dance Company in this unique JOMBA! collaboration are local Durban breakdancers Preston Kyd and Craig Katts. Renner's unique style has won awards across Europe and it is a privileged delight to have him creating work for JOMBA!

Supported by Pro-Helvetia Arts Council of Switzerland, the witty and somewhat participatory dance theatre work, “ The Making of Spectacles”, by Swiss choreographer Foofwa d'Imobilité, is a wry comment on the art form of choreography. In this dance theatre piece, the audience is invited to collaborate with the artistic team in order to compose a unique once off performance. The elements presented – dance phrases, dramatic scenarios, music, lighting design, and costuming – are carefully crafted in advance and offered as tools to the spectators/audiences for the creation of a dance to their taste. After playful, democratic voting, where humor is invited, the spectators/audiences can enjoy the synthesis of their group decisions. It is sure to have audiences in stitches!

Of special interest this year is JOMBA!'s collaboration with the Durban Art Gallery and a special edition of the popular RED EYE. Billed as “Red Eye JOMBA!”, and curated by edgy art and dance guru David Gouldie, this event (Friday 3 September) which is also part of Celebrate Durban, will host over 60 artists, musicians and dance theatre makers all responding to the theme of ‘the body politic'. Come eat, drink and party and be prepared to be dazzled, amazed, baffled – and definitely have something to talk about!

JOMBA! also offers its popular dance development platforms of the Fringe and Youth Fringe. This year's edition of the JOMBA! Fringe has attracted dancers and choreographers from all over South Africa offering a one night (6 September 2010, Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre) kaleidoscope of new and experimental works. Thirteen works have been selected and provide a wide range of short contemporary dance works in the making. The JOMBA! Youth Fringe, hosted this year at Cato Crest/Umkhumbane's Dorothy Nyembe Hall on Sunday 5 September at 2pm, is a free and open event for Durban 's youth dance groups to strut their stuff and dance just for the sheer joy of it! Sixteen youth groups have been selected and this is sure to be an afternoon of delights and some very beautiful young dancers.

JOMBA! will also host a wide range of master classes, open classes and workshops all free of charge to young, training and professional dancers in Durban.

Daring, innovative and controversial films and filmmakers from around the world will take the spotlight at the 31 st Durban International Film Festival which takes place from 22 July to 1 August. The festival programmers have scoured the globe for films that excite, thrill, raise awareness and provoke. These films will be presented in over 200 screenings at venues across Durban and in surrounding communities. Alongside the screenings of films, the festival offers an extensive workshop and seminar programme, as well as training and industry events. The festival is particularly pleased that, in a difficult funding climate, the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) has come aboard as a principal funder.
The festival will open with the world premiere of Khalo Matabane's State Of Violence, a powerful tale of revenge, history and memory. The closing film is Josh Appignanesi's hilarious comedy, The Infidel, about a British Muslim who discovers that he was born Jewish.
Between these two outstanding films, film-lovers will find daring films from new talents, superb new works by established masters, award-winners from around the world, and an unprecedented number of world premieres of new South African films. Read more...

Workshops and seminars
Optimising the presence of filmmakers and industry experts, DIFF offers a packed programme of seminars and workshops aimed at both aspirant filmmakers and professionals. An open and free workshop programme takes place daily at The Royal Hotel. Closed programmes include the 3 rd Talent Campus Durban which brings together 43 filmmakers from 18 different African countries, the 9th UKZN Audio Visual's week-long workshop for first-time filmmakers, and the inaugural edition of the Durban FilmMart, a film financing and co-production initiative in partnership with the Durban Film Office. Involving local and international producers and film financiers, the Durban FilmMart's Finance Forum and Producers Forum will provide capacity-building programmes and business networking opportunities to stimulate industry development and filmmaking in Africa. Allied to industry stimulation are DIFF audience development initiatives to broaden public access in community based venues, and a Film Literacy programme for schools in the Inanda-Ntuzuma-Kwamashu area of Durban.
Principal screening venues of the festival are the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre; Nu Metro Cinecentre - Suncoast; Ster Kinekor Junction – Musgrave; Cinema Nouveau - Gateway; Ekhaya Multi-Arts Centre in KwaMashu; and The Royal Hotel, with further screenings in township areas where cinemas are non-existent.

Dr Bhengu at the African Renaissance festival.

Her dream is to help people fulfill their dreams !

Of the launch of the book, she wrote :

“I believe if holistic transformation is to be achieved and sustained
it has to begin at a personal level. It is when the thoughts, values,
beliefs and habits change that our behaviour and actions will change.
This change will impact on our families, organisations, nation,
continent and the world. Most of us get stuck between the old world we
are scared to release and the new one we fear to embrace. The new and
united Africa requires that we boldly embrace the fear of change and
of the unknown.
Most conflicts and social ills such as poverty, inequality,
unemployment and disease thrive in a divided society where attachment

endorses the importance of the ‘Intangibles' in this new season: He
says: and I paraphrase: “In judging our progress as individuals, we
tend to concentrate on external factors such as one's social position,

humility, purity, generosity, absence of vanity, readiness to serve

cooperation and respect.

Calling on all the undiscovered talent out there!

This invitation goes out to singers, musicians, bands and performance artists to apply for auditions to be considered to perform live at the Official Fan Fest, Beach Festival and Public Viewing Areas during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. There are several performance slots to be filled on the various stages in these areas. So, this is not just any audition!

This is a golden opportunity for new talent based within the boundaries of the eThekwini Municipality to share their talent with the world!

The process is open to all styles of contemporary original music and includes, but is not limited to: Maskanda/Mbhaqanga; Isicathamiya; Jazz/Afro-Jazz; Afro-Beat; Afro-Pop; Hip-Hop; Reggae; Gospel; Blues; Folk; Country; Kwaito; Heavy Metal; Indian Classical/Contemporary; R&B; and Rock.

And there are slots available for performance artists in all genres! From dancers, mimes, jugglers and balloon artists and clowns. Whatever the style, all new talent can apply to audition!

To qualify as New Talent, musicians must be undiscovered and unrecorded. Artists who are recorded, or who have had their music play listed on radio and/or TV, and have an established following are excluded from this process as they are already in line for performance slots on other areas of the overall program.

Interested performers must complete an application form and return it to Maltre Productions, who will be managing the audition process.

Application forms can be collected from the Music School and Centre for Jazz at UKZN, Durban; the Department of Entertainment Technology at Durban University of Technology; the BAT Centre; The Stables Theatre; Ekhaya Multi Arts Centre; The Playhouse foyer; the Rainbow Restaurant; Burn Nightclub and the Cell C Durban Music School.

Earth Hour 2009 is a global initiative by the World Wide Fund for Nature which acts as a worldwide call to action to every individual, business and community to take a stand against Climate Change. To show your support, sign up now and commit to switching off your lights for one hour on Saturday, March 28th at 8:30pm. Originating in Sydney, Australia in 2007, the Earth Hour initiative proved more than worthwhile when it witnessed 2 million people coming together to switch off their lights for one hour for this vital cause.

Following on from this success, 2008 saw an estimated 50 million people taking part. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square, all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour.

Martin Cuff Consulting has been contracted to conduct an extensive review of the Film Industry in KZN. By "film" we of course mean an umbrella of entertainment media production activities including feature film, television, tv commercials, stills photography, animation, new media and video games. It also includes a range of development and distribution interventions that support the sector including film education and training.

SA innovation earns praise at Microsoft Imagine Cup

An innovative SMS-based information service for public transport has won a group of postgraduates from the University of Cape Town international recognition in the recent Microsoft Imagine.

Following 10 months of regional and national competition phases, Team Smile represented South Africa at the Imagine Cup Finals held in France this week. At the close of the event, the team was one of six teams to be awarded the opportunity to participate in Microsoft's Innovation Accelerator Programme.

ICFC South Africa March Exchange

ICFC (International Committee for Cooperation), organised an educational and cultural exchange programme between students of Lycee Stella, a secondary school in the Reunion Island, and students of Protea Secondary in Chatsworth. The programme took place in March this year.

ICFC initiated this programme to foster international person to person contact and to encourage friendship, educational and cultural exchanges. The aim of ICFC is to bring together students from India, Mauritius, Reunion Island and South Africa. For this particular programme ICFC chose Protea Secondary in Chatsworth as the school that received the students from Reunion Island.

The history of the Indians on Reunion Island is very similar to the history of South African Indians. Much like the Indians who were brought to this country to work on the sugar cane plantations as indentured labourers; the mainly South Indians were taken to Reunion Island as slaves to work on the tobacco and sugar cane plantations. The cultural and religious practices are similar to South African Indians. The difference is that Reunion Island was colonised by the French and here we follow an English way of life. This sets an interesting backdrop for the exchange between the students of Protea Secondary and the French speaking students of Reunion Island.

ICFC President, Rajen Reddy (CEO of KZN Oils), stated: “We provided our visitors a well rounded programme that included visits to tourist destinations in Kwazulu Natal, as well as interaction with the people of Chatsworth. The students enjoyed the warmth of the Chatsworth community as they lived in the homes of the Protea Secondary students.”

The French students also interacted with students at the CFAD Campus, Durban. Krish Moodley, ICFC Education Chairperson said:"We live in a global environment where everything is inter-connected therefore it is important to expose students to various influences and to a variety of cultural and educational practices.The visitors were treated to their first taste of a hot Durban delicacy at CFAD, The Bunny Chow! They thoroughly enjoyed the experience."

VETERAN struggle activist, Phyllis Naidoo (80), member of the Order of Luthuli, launches her seventh publication, Footprints Beyond Grey Street, at 2pm on Saturday, December 1 at the iconic Scala Cinema, recently revamped as part of the Curries Fountain heritage project.

Her latest book continues the theme, which she started in 2002’s Footprints in Grey Street, of telling simple stories about simple people who changed the course of South African history through personal sacrifice. While Footprints in Grey Street was located in the old Casbah area, this sequel departs from the first one by looking at footprints in other areas.

“Phyllis Naidoo’s latest book is a monument to those who don’t have tombstones or statues,” said political analyst Kiru Naidoo.

“These are stories about the youthful MKs, Charlie and Jo, killed in action and the child McBride listening to the last exchange of gunfire from the rooftop of his township home, the Chief Sekhukhune starved to death and the Nobel Laureate, Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli, peacemaker and revolutionary, denied something as simple as access to a doctor in his later years,” said Kiru Naidoo.

The book also includes a rare short story of Phyllis Naidoo’s experience in prison called Ten Green Bottles, which first appeared in an out of print publication by the Congress of South African Writers (Cosaw) in 1992, under the heading “A snake with Ice Water - Prison writings by South African Women”.

Phyllis Naidoo will also be releasing a 2008 calendar called “Make South Africa Safe For Our Children” at the launch on December 1, which is hoped to raise awareness on the plight of our children. The calendar will be included with the book for a limited period only.
